Cybersecurity: creation of the BlackBerry Labs focused on machine learning and datascience

In response to cyber security challenges, BlackBerry has announced the creation of the BlackBerry Advanced Technology Development Labs. This business unit will focus on datascience and machine learning in the service of cybersecurity. More than 120 experts will compose this unit.

The BlackBerry Labs has been conceived as a new operational unit at the forefront of research and development in the field of cybersecurity. Under the direction of Charles Eagan, CTO, the lab will include a team of more than 120 software developers, architects, researchers, product managers, and security experts, all working toward the common goal of identifying, exploring, and creating new technologies to ensure that BlackBerry is at the forefront of technology and innovation in security.

Strongly focused on data science and machine learning, BlackBerry Labs' innovation will investigate, incubate and facilitate technologies specifically designed to strengthen the company's commitment to data security, protection and privacy.

The first projects of BlackBerry Labs will focus on machine-learning approaches to security in partnership with existing business units of BlackBerry, Cylance, Enterprise and QNX.

"The establishment of BlackBerry Labs is the latest announcement of a series of strategic steps taken to ensure the protection of our customers on all endpoints and at all levels in the new IoT," said Charles Eagan, CTO of BlackBerry.

"The cybersecurity industry is booming and BlackBerry Labs will function as its own business unit focused solely on innovation and the development of the technologies of tomorrow that will be required for our continued competitive success, from A to Z, the artificial intelligence to absolute trust. We are confident that this highly experienced team will enable us to remain agile, committed and, above all, proactive in our efforts to become the most trusted security software leader on the market.
